Is Your School Asthma-Friendly?

Children with asthma need proper support at school to keep their asthma under control and be fully active. Often times steps can be taken to prevent asthma attacks. Use the questions below to find out how well your school assists children with asthma:

  • Is your school "smoke free"?
  • Is good indoor air quality maintained?
  • Are allergens and irritants reduced or eliminated?
  • Is a school nurse available in your school all day, every day?
  • Are children allowed to carry and take medicinesto the school as recommended by their doctor?
  • Is there an emergency plan for taking care of a child with a severe asthma
  • Are school staff informed about asthma, asthma management plans, and asthma medicines?

Students may be facing obstacles to asthma control, if the answer to any question is no. School staff, health professionals, and parents should work together to promote students' health and education.
