Pleurodynia

What is pleurodynia?

Pleurodynia is an infectious disease that causes pain in the chest. It often occurs in epidemics, most often in people under the age of 20. When it occurs in epidemics, it is referred to as epidemic pleurodynia or Bornholm disease.

How does it occur?

Pleurodynia is usually caused by the group B coxsackie virus. It is more common in children and young adults. The covering of the lungs becomes inflamed and irritated, especially during deep breathing.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms include:

  • sudden sharp pain over the rib area of chest or upper abdomen

  • fever

  • sore throat

  • fatigue

  • headache.

How is it diagnosed?

Your doctor will rule out other causes of chest pain, such as pneumonia, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and heart attack.

How is it treated?

Generally the infection will get better on its own in 3 to 4 days. Simple home remedies can help relieve your symptoms such as taking ibuprofen.

How long will the effects last?

The infection causing the pain should clear in 3 to 4 days.

How can I take care of myself?

Follow treatment prescribed by your doctor. In addition:

  • Rest in bed.

  • Eat balanced meals.

  • Drink nutritious fluids if your throat is too sore to eat.

How can I avoid getting pleurodynia?

The best prevention is taking care of yourself and avoiding exposure to people who have any type of respiratory infection.
