Emergency Card FAQ

Every year, people die in emergency rooms because important medical information is not available to emergency department physicians in a timely manner.

These physicians, who must make split second decisions regarding treatments and drugs, tell us that access to a patient's PersonalMD-ER Card can mean the difference between life and death. In the advent of an emergency, physicians the member authorizes, anywhere in the world, can access this crucial information upon arrival in the emergency department&or earlier.

Even paramedics can be authorized to alert emergency department physicians to PersonalMD-ER Card information while en route to the hospital. Physicians call this service a breakthrough in the emergency physician's ability to make informed, split second decisions regarding the health of patients and say it could mean the difference between life and death.

Even if your reason for visiting the emergency room is not life-threatening, granting permission for the physician to access the information on your PersonalMD-ER Card eliminates the possibility of physicians administering medications to which you may be allergic.

It also alerts physicians to personal or family history of related problems, reduces the need for many tests routinely given to incoming ER patients and eliminates the worry of remembering all of your medical information during at an extremely stressful time.

How do I get it?

Once you become a PersonalMD member and fill in the data fields, you can click on the "Manage Account" tab in your medical records to preview and customize your card.

  • The only information you MUST have on your card is your name. All additional data is based upon what YOU determine you would like to appear. We do, however, recommend placing your PIN code on the card in the unfortunate event that you arrive in an emergency room in an unconscious state and are unable to give it to the physician.
Other information emergency department physicians have indicated they would like to see printed directly on the card includes your physician's names, allergies and re-occurring medical conditions.
